The strength of a 1.2mm thick stainless steel woven wire mesh can be considerable. As always, it’s important to remember that the overall strength will be influenced by several factors, including the type of stainless steel used, the number of holes per linear inch, and the diameter of each hole.
In this case, having 4 holes per linear inch with each hole being 5mm in diameter provides a good balance of strength and permeability. The lower number of holes per linear inch means that there’s more steel present, which would generally make the mesh stronger.
The 1.2mm thickness of the wire does offer significant rigidity and durability, making it resistant to impact, stretching, and tearing. It should be able to withstand substantial weight and pressure without deforming, although the exact amount it can bear would depend on the specifics of the application.
However, while a stainless steel woven wire mesh of this specification is strong, it’s important to understand that the introduction of holes (even at 4 per linear inch) does reduce the overall strength somewhat compared to a solid sheet of stainless steel of the same thickness. Despite this, the mesh should still be more than capable for most typical applications, including filtration, security, and rodent-proofing.

No, whilst this is one of the thickest wires that can be woven into mesh, we do offer 1.6mm wire thickness. This is slightly thicker and, as a result, stronger.
4 mesh made with a 1.2mm thick wire is very strong in its own right however.
A 1.2mm thick stainless steel woven wire mesh with 4 holes per linear inch (5mm hole size) can provide a strong barrier against most rodents.
Rodents, such as mice and rats, have a well-known ability to squeeze through small gaps. However, a hole size of 5mm is small enough to prevent adult rodents from passing through. Given the thickness and strength of the 1.2mm stainless steel mesh, it should be highly resistant to gnawing, which is an important consideration since rodents can often chew through softer materials.

In 2008 Locker Wire Weavers launched The Mesh Company to bring our enormous range of wire mesh products to the general public for the first time. Previously wire mesh was only available for trade customers.
We continue to extend our range, and now proudly offer many forms of mesh and metal products for the best possible prices. We specialise in woven wire mesh. As a group we work closely with architects and designers to develop ground-breaking new applications for our multifunctional range of materials. We also offer state of the art fabrication and engineering for projects of all sizes.
Strong ties with the Warrington community continue to be at the very core of our business. We are proud to invest in the training and developing our staff of all levels in line with the traditions set by Thomas Locker, who founded our group 150 years ago when he invented the electronic loom.
