FAQs For This Galvanised Steel Mesh

How Do I Cut This Wire Mesh?

In order to cut a 0.4mm thick galvanised steel woven wire mesh, you’ll need safety gloves, protective eyewear, tin snips or wire cutters, and a ruler or measuring tape for accurate measurements. To begin with, it is always a good idea to prioritise safety by wearing gloves and eye protection. On the mesh, measure your desired dimensions and mark them on the mesh according to your measurement. You will need to lay the mesh flat on a stable surface in order to be able to cut it precisely. Using tin snips, just like you would with scissors, start at one end of the marked line and cut across it while holding the free end of the mesh in your other hand so as to keep it stable while you are cutting. Alternatively, aviation snips can be used if you want to have more control over the process. If there are any sharp edges left after cutting, use your snips to trim them to give the finished product a smoother finish. Always handle freshly cut mesh with care due to its sharp edges and ensure any metal fragments or off-cuts are safely disposed of. For best results, use sharp tools, and consider professional services for intricate or large-scale projects.

How Is The Wire Galvanised?

Galvanisation is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. For wire mesh and many other steel products, galvanising can be accomplished using several methods, with the most common being hot-dip galvanising. Here’s a brief explanation of the hot-dip galvanisation process:

  1. Preparation: The steel wire is thoroughly cleaned to remove any oils, greases, and residual particles. This is typically done using a series of treatments involving caustic cleaning, rinsing, pickling (in dilute sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid to remove mill scale and rust), and fluxing. Fluxing removes any remaining oxides from the wire surface and forms a protective layer to prevent any further oxidation before dipping into the molten zinc.
  2. Hot-Dip Galvanising: After cleaning, the wire is submerged in a molten bath of zinc, typically at temperatures of around 460°C (860°F). The steel reacts with the zinc to form layers of zinc-iron alloy, with the pure zinc layer on the outermost surface.
  3. Cooling: Once the wire is withdrawn from the molten zinc, it is cooled, either passively in the open air or more quickly by quenching it in water.
  4. Inspection: The thickness of the zinc coating is inspected to ensure it meets specific standards or requirements.
  5. Finishing: If necessary, the wire can be further processed, such as by drawing it through dies to achieve a desired size or shape.
