Rodent infestation can be a huge problem for homeowners.
These persistent creatures can chew through almost anything, causing serious damage to your property.
Not only that, but they also carry harmful diseases that can be a danger to you and your family’s health.
While there are various methods to keep them out, copper mesh has recently gained popularity for its effectiveness in deterring rodents.
In this blog post, we’ll discuss the benefits of using copper mesh as a rodent deterrent, and how it can keep your home rodent-free.
Let’s get into it….
What Is Copper Mesh And How Does It Work?
Copper mesh is a highly durable material made from, obviously, copper wire.
These materials are tightly woven or knitted together to create a mesh that is impenetrable to rodents.
Our mesh can be used to seal off any gaps, openings, or holes that rodents might use to gain access to your home.
Copper mesh is highly resistant to corrosion, rust, and chewing.
They do not like chewing because rodents do not like copper because it has natural anti-bacterial properties that can be harmful to them. Scientists believe that this is due to the fast that copper ions are released when rodents come into contact with copper, and these ions can damage their cell membranes and interfere with their metabolism.
Woven and knitted mesh can be easily cut and moulded into any shape or size, making it highly versatile. Knitted wire has less structure than woven wire, so it does not hold its shape as well.
Why Is Copper Mesh An Ideal Solution For Rodent Control?
Copper is a natural repellent to rodents.
They are highly sensitive to its odour and taste, making it an excellent deterrent for keeping them away.
Additionally, copper mesh is long-lasting, which means it won’t need to be replaced often, unlike other solutions that may require frequent maintenance.
Copper mesh is an eco-friendly solution to rodent infestation, as it doesn’t involve the use of hazardous chemicals that can harm your pets, plants or damage the environment.
As Copper mesh is a sustainable material, it’s easy to recycle and can be repurposed for other uses.
This, like all of our rodent control products, is a humane measure. We believe in deterrents not destruction.
How To Use Copper Mesh To Keep Rodents Away?
The first step is to identify areas where rodents might enter your home. In our experience. this could be around pipes, cables, vents, windows, doors, or any other spot that rodents can squeeze through.
Mice have the stunning ability to squeeze through very small openings. Experts suggest that a mouse can fit through a hole that is about the size of its skull, which is typically around 2cm. A rat is larger, and the suggested size is 2.5 to 3.8cm. Our woven mesh has an opening of 2.5mm, so it is easily small enough to block both rats and mice.
Once you’ve identified the areas that need to be sealed, you can cut the copper mesh into an appropriate size that fits the gap or opening. To install the mesh, simply push it into the opening using a screwdriver or any other tool. Ensure the mesh is tightly packed, so there are no gaps.
What Options Are There?
Copper Knitted Stuffit Mesh
This is the most popular copper mesh option on the market.
This is a lay flat knitted copper mesh tube. In recent times it has become referred to as ‘Stuffit’ and used for rodent proofing projects.
Knitted copper stuffit mesh is a popular choice for rodent control for several reasons:
Physical Barrier: This is the main reason to use rodent control mesh. The knitted construction of the mesh creates a physical barrier that prevents rodents and other pests from entering through gaps and cracks in buildings, walls, and other structures.
Durable Material: Copper is a durable and long-lasting material that can withstand harsh weather conditions, extreme temperatures, and is resistant to corrosion and degradation.
Non-Toxic: Copper is a non-toxic material. This means that it is safe to use in residential and commercial settings.
Pest Control Properties: Copper has natural antimicrobial and insecticidal properties that can help deter pests, making it an effective barrier against rodents, insects, and other unwanted critters.
This mesh is ideally used to stuff into gaps and vents to create an unpassable blockage to prevent rats and mice from gaining ingress.

Woven Wire Copper Rodent Mesh
Alternatively, our 2.5mm copper woven wire rodent mesh is a stronger and longer-lasting option.
The 0.63mm diameter copper wire used to weave the mesh is strong and durable, making it difficult for rodents to chew through or break.
The 2.5mm hole size (aperture) is ideal for stopping all rodents from getting through. It is basically a rodent filter.
Woven mesh is more costly to produce than knitted wire, so this is the more expensive option. However, over the lifespan of the mesh this is negligible.
This woven mesh is best used as a long strip behind soffits, airbricks. It is slit down to long short roll widths and available in several long lengths.

Other Benefits Of Using Copper Mesh
In addition to keeping rodents at bay, there are other benefits to using copper mesh.
Firstly, it would work as an insect mesh. Both of these metal materials can also prevent other pests like bees and wasps from nesting in your home.
All wire mesh is effective in keeping out debris, leaves, and twigs, preventing them from blocking gutters or drain pipes. It is a natural filtration material.
We have recently written articles stressing copper’s amazing ability to stop slugs and snails. This is another major benefit of using copper rodent control materials.
Copper mesh is an affordable, non-toxic, and long-lasting solution to keep rodents out of your home.
It’s easy to use and highly effective in sealing off gaps and openings. Most importantly is a natural repellent to rodents, making it an eco-friendly option for anyone who wants to keep their home rodent-free.

What Is The Most Popular Rodent Mesh?
Our 1/4″ galvanised steel welded rodent mesh, known to us as RatMesh, is the most commonly selected rodent mesh option.
It is more sturdy and rigid than the copper and gives different benefits.
These are the standard widths:
