Have you ever wanted to try your hand at 3D arts and crafts, but don’t know where to start? Well, chicken mesh may be just the craft material for you!

This versatile product is perfect for novice and experienced crafters alike, offering endless possibilities for projects. You don’t have to take on a project like the lady above either. It can be used for small scale projects like jewellery or decoration making.

Let’s take a deeper dive into why chicken mesh is the material for you….

        What Is Chicken Mesh?

Chicken mesh is a lightweight netting that usually has a steel core and is then either coated with zinc or PVC.  As you can see from our other articles, it is often used as fencing in poultry farms, hence the name “chicken mesh”. See our detailed articles on using chicken wire to build chicken coops or for urban chicken keeping.

However, this durable and flexible material can also be used in various crafting projects including wall hangings, baskets, sculpture and for other decorative items.

It is super flexible and easy to use.  It takes a little trial and error at first and then it is very easy to use.

Why Use Chicken Mesh For Arts and Crafts?

Chicken mesh has several advantages when it comes to arts and crafts projects. It’s lightweight yet sturdy enough that it won’t bend or break easily, making it perfect for creating unique 3D pieces like sculptures or wall hangings. It’s also flexible enough that you can twist the wire into shapes fairly easily—great for making baskets or wreaths. And because chicken mesh is made from galvanised steel or coated in green PVC, it won’t rust so your artwork will stay looking beautiful for years to come.

Chicken mesh is affordable, malleable and will hold its shape, so it really is a great material to work with.

We have also worked with sculptors who have used is as the framework for other mediums, such as clay animation.

        How To Get Started

The best part about crafting with chicken mesh is that you don’t need any special tools or materials—all you need are some basic supplies such as scissors and pliers. Once you have those items on hand, the possibilities are endless.

You can make jewellery pieces such as necklaces and earrings; create decorative objects like wind chimes; or even make functional pieces like hanging shelves or wall organisers.

How Do I Make A Chicken Wire Mesh Sculpture?

This is a very basic guide. But broadly these are the steps that you will need to follow:

        Materials:

        • Chicken wire mesh
        • Wire cutters
        • Pliers
        • Gloves (to protect your hands)

        Instructions:

        1. Start by deciding on the shape and size of your sculpture. Draw a sketch or make a basic outline of the shape you want to create.

        2. Cut a piece of chicken wire mesh to the size and shape you need. Use wire cutters to cut through the mesh, being careful not to damage the wire or hurt yourself.

        3. Use pliers to bend and shape the wire mesh into the desired shape. You may need to use multiple pieces of mesh to create the final sculpture, so be prepared to connect and attach them together as needed.

        4. Once you have the basic shape of the sculpture, start adding details and texture by manipulating the wire mesh with your pliers. Bend and twist the wire to create curves and angles, or use the pliers to create small loops and spirals.

        5. As you work, periodically step back and assess the sculpture from different angles to make sure it is balanced and visually interesting. Adjust the wire mesh as needed to create the desired effect.

        6. Once you are satisfied with the final shape and texture of the sculpture, use pliers to tuck in any sharp edges or loose wire ends. You can also use wire or string to reinforce any weak spots or connections.

        7. Finally, you can add additional embellishments or decorations to the sculpture, such as paint, fabric, or other materials. Use your imagination and creativity to make the sculpture truly unique and expressive.

This guide was given to us from one of the sculptors who we work with regularly. Follow the instructions carefully and please do take care not to let the wires cut you.

Please do share any creations that you make using wire mesh. We would love to write about them or share them through our social media.

What Chicken Mesh Options Are Available?

Galvanised steel small = 13mm hole

13mm galvanised chicken mesh can be a great material to use for arts and crafts projects. This mesh is made of strong, durable galvanised steel wire that is resistant to rust and corrosion, making it ideal for long-lasting projects.

The fact that there are more wires per inch than the larger openings means that this is the strongest and heaviest option.

Green PVC small = 13mm hole

13mm green PVC chicken mesh can be used in a variety of arts and crafts projects, from creating decorative items like wall art and wreaths, to functional objects like planters and baskets.

PVC coating can add flexibility and softness to the chicken mesh, making it easier to work with and manipulate. This can be important for projects that require bending or shaping the mesh.

Galvanised steel medium = 25mm hole

25mm galvanised chicken mesh can also be a great material to use for arts and crafts projects.

This mesh is made of strong, durable galvanised steel wire that is resistant to rust and corrosion, just like the 13mm version.

Green PVC medium = 25mm hole

The PVC coating provides additional protection against corrosion and rust, making the mesh more durable and longer-lasting. This can be important for projects that will be exposed to the elements, like outdoor sculptures or planters.

        Galvanised steel large = a 50mm hole

50mm galvanised steel chicken mesh can be a great material to use for arts and crafts projects that require a more open structure.

The larger size of the mesh openings makes it ideal for larger projects, such as outdoor sculptures or installations.

        Green PVC large = a 50mm hole

50mm green PVC chicken mesh can be a versatile and visually interesting material to use in arts and crafts projects. It provides additional durability and flexibility, while also adding a pop of colour and reducing the risk of injury during handling.

The holes are large, which means that this is the easiest to manipulate out of our chicken mesh options.

Chicken mesh crafts are a great way to explore your creative side while making something unique and beautiful at the same time! Whether you’re looking for an outlet for your artistic talents or just want something fun to do on the weekends, chicken mesh crafting offers endless possibilities that won’t break the bank either. So grab some supplies today and see what amazing creations you can make with chicken mesh!
