Everything that you need to know about #16: Steel Hexagonal Metal Mesh

hexagonal steel metal mesh
  • Category: Perforated Metal

For those in the market for a lightweight and versatile material that offers excellent durability, perforated hexagonal steel metal mesh is an ideal option.

It is a type of metal mesh that is made up of interconnected hexagons, giving it a honeycomb-like appearance.

Perforated hexagonal steel metal mesh has many uses, including industrial applications such as filtration and containment, as well as decorative applications such as wall art and jewellery.

Let’s explore some of the benefits of this unique material….

How Is Hexagonal Mesh Produced?

Very simply, steel perforated metal mesh with a hexagonal hole is typically produced using a process called perforation. In this case the perforation have a hexagonal shape and pattern.

The production process involves feeding a flat sheet of steel through a machine that punches out hexagonal holes using a die or a series of dies.

The size and pattern of the hexagonal holes can be customized to meet the specific needs of the application. The resulting perforated sheet can then be cut and formed into various shapes and sizes to fit the intended use.

Strength & Durability

Perforated hexagonal steel metal mesh is incredibly strong and durable due to its interconnected structure.

Our customers favour it for both industrial and decorative applications that require strength and durability.

This type of metal mesh can withstand extreme temperatures and harsh weather conditions without breaking or cracking, making it perfect for outdoor projects like enclosures or fencing.

We would not suggest this metal if there is a chance that it could get wet however. We stock a galvanised steel option. This would have far better corrosion resistance as it carries a zinc coating.

Versatility

Another advantage of perforated hexagonal steel metal mesh is its versatility.

Thanks to its unique desirable shape, it can be used in a variety of ways from filtration to art installations.

It can also be bent into different shapes for use in curved surfaces like furniture or walls. Bending hexagonal perforated metal mesh can be done with the help of tools such as a metal press brake or a bending machine.

Some of the common applications include:

  1. Filtration: Hexagonal perforated metal mesh is used in the oil and gas industry, food processing, and other industries to filter out impurities and particles.

  2. Ventilation: Our customers have used it for ventilation and air flow in buildings, vehicles, and industrial equipment.

  3. Decorative: Hexagonal mesh is used for architectural design, interior design, and artistic installations due to its unique hexagonal hole pattern.

  4. Grills: This range of metal mesh is used for grills and screens in automotive, aviation, and industrial equipment.

  5. Acoustics: Perforated metal mesh is used in soundproofing and acoustic applications due to its ability to absorb sound waves. Hexagonal mesh is a great acoustic solution.

  6. Signage: It is often used for signage and branding purposes due to its ability to display logos and other images.

Can I Weld It?

Yes. Mild steel is very often used by our customers because it can be welded. Here is a brief outline:

  • Bending & Forming – Fair. You could bend this metal with basic tools but not by hand. The thicker the sheet the harder this is to do
  • Corrosion Resistance – Poor. We do not recommend mild steel if you require high resistance to corrosion. You should use one of our galvanised steel options if this is required
  • Machining, Drilling & Grinding: Good. Mild steel is the metal choice for many forms of machining and grinding
  • Welding – Excellent. You could easily weld with this mesh to suit your requirements
  • Painting – Good. Mild steel is used when a layer of paint needs to be added. Galvanised and stainless steel will not take paint

Available Hexagonal Metal Mesh Options

2mm Hexagonal Hole

2mm is the smallest hole size that we stock with a hexagonal pattern.

It is very popular for sieving and filtration applications. It can be bent a little, but in general it is strong and stays flat.

  • Hole Size (Aperture) – 2mm hexagonal hole
  • Pitch – 2.5mm
  • Thickness – 1mm

4.5mm Hexagonal Hole

4.5mm perforated hexagonal hole steel metal mesh is a durable and versatile material that can be used in various industrial and architectural applications. Its hexagonal hole pattern allows for efficient airflow and particle separation, making it ideal for use in filtration, sieving, and other similar processes.

  • Hole Size (Aperture) – 4.5mm hexagonal hole
  • Pitch – 5mm
  • Thickness – 1mm

6mm Hexagonal Hole

This 6mm hexagonal hole pattern allows for efficient filtration and sieving, making it ideal for use in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction.

  • Hole Size (Aperture) – 6mm hexagonal hole
  • Pitch – 6.7mm
  • Thickness – 1mm

8mm Hexagonal Hole

8mm perforated hexagonal hole steel metal mesh is a robust and sturdy material used in various industrial and architectural applications. Its larger hexagonal hole pattern enables efficient air flow and particle separation, making it an ideal choice for filtration, ventilation, and decorative purposes.

  • Hole Size (Aperture) – 8mm hexagonal hole
  • Pitch – 8.7mm
  • Thickness – 1mm

Could I Use It For Rodent Control?

Definitely. This would prove to be too strong for rodents to penetrate, and it would be quite good for blocking gaps and vents as it lays totally flat.

This would be an internal solution only as it would rust if used outside.

As always, thank you for checking out our blog. We hope that this helps you with your project. We try to launch a couple of new guides every week. Eventually we will have covered everything there is to cover about mesh.

Our goal for our blogs and help guides is to answer as many questions as possible to help to explain the possibilities of mesh to our customers.  Contact our team today if you have any questions at all. We are always really keen to help in any way that we can.
